About Forensic Training Network

Forensic Training Network, L.L.C. was cofounded by Catherine Caballero and Jaime Handelsman.  Combined, they have over 20 years of real-world forensic experience.

Their areas of expertise include real-time qPCR, STR data analysis, expert systems, capillary electrophoresis, serology, quality assurance and quality control, crime scene investigation and court testimony.

Catherine Caballero

Catherine Caballero has been dedicated to the field of forensic science since 1994.  Her presence in the community is strong as a result of her extensive experience working with forensic scientists around the world.  Most recently she worked for Applied Biosystems where she was responsible for providing training and troubleshooting support to forensic DNA scientists.   She also gained extensive experience developing and delivering hands-on training programs, conducting technical workshops and presenting on forensic DNA technology at seminars and tradeshows.  Catherine is considered to be a leader in this arena and is a mentor to many of her colleagues.

Catherine worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab during the years in which DNA technology was first adopted by the state of Texas.  She was credited with establishing the DNA lab in Corpus Christi, validating and implementing STR technology in Houston, and providing hands-on training for her colleagues throughout the state.  In addition, Catherine conducted crime scene investigations with the Texas Rangers and performed casework analysis including serology, DNA analysis, and court testimony.  During her college years, Catherine interned at the California Criminalistics Institute and worked for two private labs.   She received a Bachelors of Science in Forensic Science with a minor in Chemistry from the California State University, Sacramento.

Jaime Handelsman

Jaime Handelsman is known among her colleagues and peers in the forensic community for her commitment to provide excellence in training.  She has many years of experience developing training courses, lectures and workshops on the latest forensic DNA technologies.  Jaime has trained hundreds of forensic analysts from crime laboratories across the United States and has given numerous technical presentations at industry meetings and conferences.  Her experience and extensive understanding of the forensic DNA workflow enabled her to become a domain expert on the development of forensic data analysis software at Applied Biosystems where she worked as part of their forensic team in various roles since 2001.

Jaime began her career in forensic science at the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) in Rockville, Maryland.  There, she received training in mtDNA and STR analysis, played a significant role in the laboratory’s quality control program and participated in other forensic research projects, such as automation.  While living in Rockville Jaime also attended advanced genetic and forensic biology courses as part of the Forensic Molecular Biology graduate program at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.  She developed her interest in DNA techniques and forensic science while earning her Bachelors of Health Science degree at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.
